Bengaluru: Leader of the  opposition in the BBMP council,  Padmanabha Reddy feels the 12 standing committees of the civic body need to be empowered to play a more effective role in the running of the civic  body. Addressing  the BBMP monthly council meeting on Thursday, he noted that these committees did not have any powers at present. “Both the elected representatives and bureaucrats should run the administration together. But as the standing committees do not have any powers, the officials  don’t even bother to send the required files to them,” he lamented.

Mr Reddy insisted that a debate should be held on the powers of the elected representatives of the BBMP and the Karnataka State Municipal Council Act, which governs it and suitable amendments  made to empower the committees. In his reply to Mr Reddy, Mayor Sampath Raj noted that the terms of the 12 standing committees were due to end in another three months and said the matter could be discussed later.
