TN govt to set up badminton academy

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will set up a Badminton Academy at the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University campus at an estimated Rs 10 crore, here, and also launch a programme to equip sportspersons to excel in international tournaments, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami informed on Thursday.

Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, the CM said there were many shuttlers in Tamil Nadu capable of winning medals in international events and the proposed badminton academy will encourage such players. The government will identify 50 sportspersons including differently-abled and train them to win medals in international tournaments.

About '5 crore would be spent annually towards procuring equipment, provide training in foreign countries and help the athletes take part in competitions, the CM added.

A District Sports Complex equipped with modern facilities like athletic track, gymnasium and swimming pool would be built in Vellore at an estimated cost of Rs 17.35 crore.
