Hyderabad: A car with a drunk driver at the wheel hit an autorickshaw and the footpath and flipped over, killing the driver’s friend, an engineering student, in the early hours of Sunday in Madhapur.
The victim was identified as M. Sai Vihita, 20, a BTech final year student in a private engineering college, and the drunk driver as Suchith Babu, her classmate.
Police said Vihita was sitting in the front passenger seat and was thrown out of the vehicle. She sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. Autorickshaw driver M. Chandar sustained injuries.
Suchith Babu fled from the scene without stopping to help either victim, police said.
A Madhapur police official said Suchith Babu had taken Vihita out for a ride. The accident occurred when they were on the 100 Feet Road, Madhapur.
Madhapur inspector S. Venkat Reddy said, “When the car reached Parvathnagar crossroads, he was trying to overtake an autorickshaw at high speed. He hit the autorickshaw and lost control of the car which hit the footpath. The car overturned three times before coming to a halt. Vihita who was sitting in the front seat and reportedly not wearing a seat belt fell on the road and sustained a severe head injury, which caused her instant death.”
The autorickshaw driver was shifted to a hospital by locals. Madhapur police registered a case against Suchith. Efforts are being made to nab him.
