Hyderabad: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a circular on Monday asking all affiliated schools to use solar panels. The step was proposed to reduce electricity bills and to increase awareness among students about renewable sources of energy.

Some schools in TS have taken it a step forward and are already planning on extending the solar panels they have. M. Varalakshmi, principal of Jubilee Hills Public School whose buildings are solar powered says,

“Our electricity bill which was more than Rs 2 lakh a month has been halved by our 100 KV panels. The project cost us Rs 70 lakh and we got subsidy from the government.”

She said the school would soon be able to sell electricity to the state.

The process of selling surplus electricity to the government is being done regularly. If the school produces 100 units of power through their solar panels and uses only 50 the remaining is sold to the electricity board.

Sunitha Rao, the principal of Delhi Public School, Nacharam said the step will be taken up by their schools but cannot be done overnight. "Our school has floodlights in our basketball and cricket field. We also have labs with computers and many facilities require round the clock power supply. Although we have a hostel that is solar powered our school buildings are yet to be solar powered.”
