Coimbatore: Special court opened to handle harassment cases
As many as 800 women harassment cases are pending in the Coimbatore district court.
COIMBATORE: A special court for handling family disputes and woman harassment cases was inaugurated here on Wednesday.
Following directions of the Supreme Court, a new special court was inaugurated at the integrated court complex here. Principal district judge, Sakthivel, inaugurated the special court along with additional sessions court judge, Gunasekaran, judge Ravi and district collector, Rasamani.
Judge Sakthivel during the inauguration said, “Harassment cases against woman including oral and physical abuse, cases in connection with women being harassed by husband or else by their family members, dowry harassment, sexual assaults promising marriage, and such cases were so far handled by judicial magistrate courts. Now, these cases will be transferred to the newly inaugurated special court.”
As many as 800 women harassment cases are pending in the Coimbatore district court, of which 600 cases recorded within the city limits will be immediately transferred to the special court, and further proceedings will be started. Judge Thilageshwari will be taking charge of this special court, added judge Sakthivel.
MLA Amman Arjun, City Police Commissioner Sumit Saran, Deputy Commissioner Balaji Saravanan (L&O) Perumal (crime) SP Sujith Kumar, and several lawyers were present during the inauguration.
