COIMBATORE: With the Southwest monsoon in a transition phase with its last few days playing out, and the Northeast monsoon to set in over the State in October, experts predict more rains and thunderstorms for the Coimbatore western region.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to lash western parts of the state and south Tamil Nadu during the next two weeks. "However, it is difficult to predict the quantum of rainfall that we will receive during the stated period." G. Santhosh Krishnan, a city-based youth who manages and owns a Facebook page Coimbatore Weatherman told DC. During the northeast monsoon we will experience heavy rainfall between October 15 and November 15. "In the last decade, 2005 and 2011 have proved to be the best years for Coimbatore keeping in mind the quantum of rainfall the textile city received during the northeast monsoon." Santhosh added.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Crop Management, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has predicted normal rainfall for the entire state during the northeast monsoon season between October and December.

During the Northeast monsoon, normal rainfall is expected at 60 per cent probability level throughout Tamil Nadu. "As more than normal rainfall has been received during August and September months, there is enough moisture stored in the soil.  Hence, farmers may take up sowing immediately with the available soil moisture that would support the initial crop growth.  Further the rainfall from Northeast monsoon will help in better crop growth and productivity," a source from the Directorate of Crop Management of TNAU said.
