Chennai: Dead end to road projects
Several flyovers and other road projects yet to be completed.
Chennai: Both the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the State Highways (SH) are the main government agencies to improve Chennai city's road infrastructure by constructing flyovers, grade interchangers, roads and bridges. Some expensive road and flyover projects, which started several years ago, have been stalled on various accounts, wasting taxpayers' money.
A case in the point is the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated four-lane corridor for which the foundation stone was laid a decade ago. One can see half-finished several pillars that stand in the stretch between Maduravoyal and Koyambedu and the other pillars that pass through Cooum river. The NHAI, which took up the work in 2009, could not continue construction works, as it faced several hurdles including acquiring lands and getting clearance certificates. "Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as state government has cooperated and given its nod to resume works," said a NHAI official.
