Udupi: The famous Udupi Sri Krishna Math will shortly have a new attraction in the form of a suvarna (gold plated) gopura, joining the league of the select few temples that boast of it in the country. The work on the project was launched  on Wednesday.

Under this dream project of Vidyadheesha Teertha swamiji of Palimaru Math, who is the present paryaya peetadhipathi, the 2,500 sq ft gopura will receive a gold plating using around 100 kgs of gold costing about '32 crore.

Although  the initial proposal was to lay the gold cover over  the copper sheets covering the gopura, it has now been decided to do the gold plating on silver sheets made from 500 kgs of silver. The gopura will also have the ‘Hamsa,’ mantra inscribed on it 21,600 times.

"The project is being done with the support of devotees. Even small donations are welcome. We want to complete the project in four months.  Anybody visiting the math can see the work underway on the  gopura near the goshala," said  Vidyadheesha Teertha swamiji. The gold plating is being supervised by U Venkatesh Shet of the Pragati Association.
