Chennai: In an early sign of the Global Investors Meet, organised by the State government in September, 2015 bearing fruit, industries established at a cost of Rs 3,3,86 crore were inaugurated by the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Friday. She also laid the foundation stone for industrial plants worth Rs 6,418 crore.

The factories are expected to provide employment opportunities for nearly 15,000 people in the State. Inaugurating the plants, Jayalalithaa said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to meet you and I offer my congratulations to you and best wishes for greater and greater growth and prosperity”.

The GIM was organised with an objective of attracting industrial growth prospects in Tamil Nadu, revealing the Government’s commitment in maintaining the state’s position as one of India’s most preferred investment destinations.

Investors across the globe had made commitments to the tune of Rs 2.42 lakh crore, double the target the state government had set for itself. Among state initiatives for industry, the government had introduced the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy policy 2012, TN Industrial policy 2014, Motor Vehicle and Spare parts policy 2014 and Bio-Technology Policy 2014. In line with this, the government organised GIM in September 2015.

Based on the promises made in the GIM, Saint-Gobain, a famed global firm based in France had opened its Rs 250 crore research unit - Saint-Gobain Research India, in Taramani in Chennai. The plant would provide employment opportunities to 110 persons. Chief Minister opened the plant through video-conference.
