Girl students' achievements still not recognised: Governor P Sathasivam
Though the girls nowadays perform better than boys in various aspects, the prevailing tendency is not to recognise their achievements.
Kottayam: Governor P. Sathasivam on Tuesday stressed the need for empowering girls through education to end gender discrimination.
Inaugurating the bic-entennial celebrations of the Baker Memorial Higher Secondary Scho-ol here, he said women were fighting discrimination in the realm of social, economic and fa-mily even seven decades after independence.
Though the girls nowadays perform better than boys in various aspects, the prevailing tendency is not to recognise their achievements.
"It is said that if you educate a boy, you are educating an individual and if you educate a woman, you are educating a family," he said. "But if you educate a girl, you are educating the future of our nation."
He praised the Baker Memorial School’s role in the transformation of Kottayam into the city letters. The progress made from the first batch of six students to the current strength of 1400 itself shows the social acceptance of progressive values upheld by the institution.
Maintaining that education should enable girls to keep their eyes and ears open to the pulse of the society, he also urged schools to encourage social interaction.
He highlighted the significance of technology in education and asked the school authorities to take up awareness programmes on fundamental duties.
Former Supreme Court judge Justice K. T. Thomas was also present. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan MLA presided over the function while principal Jeggy Joseph welcomed the gathering.
