Jeevajalam' rejuvenates water bodies in 3rd year
Each school should select a dying water body; well, river or rivulet and rejuvenate it through participatory efforts in April, May months.
Kozhikode: Students’ Army for Vivid Environment (SAVE), the green initiative at the schools in the district has come up with its ‘Jeevajalam’ project in the third year to rejuvenate water bodies in the district. Each school should select a dying water body; well, river or rivulet and rejuvenate it through participatory efforts in April, May months.
“There are 1119 schools in the district up to high school level in government/aided sector. A school rejuvenating a water body meant 1119 water bodies are getting back to life which would become a major achievement,” says Vadayakkandy Narayanan, SAVE district coordinator and teacher. The inauguration of the project will be held next month at Government Teachers Training Institute Campus at Nadakkavu by cleansing the pond there.
The rejuvenation work will be held under the aegis of a public committee which consists of local MLA, PTA members, green activists, staff and students.
The committee will also look after the conservation aspect of the water body after rejuvenation. As many as 500 water bodies were rejuvenated last year and less than 100, in 2017. “Many of the water bodies we brought back to life were again in a dying condition due to the lack of maintenance. This should be plugged,” said Mr Narayanan. Besides, all the ponds in the premises of temples and mosques should also be brought under the programme.
Devaswom board members and Mosque committee members should be made part of the initiative.
