Shillong: Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani Tuesday urged the pass out postgraduates of Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong not to forget their roots while pursuing their dreams.

Addressing the seventh Convocation of IIM, Shillong here Irani expressed deep appreciation to the parents who met with various challenges in sending their children to study in this institute and asked the graduates to be grateful to them and to keep in touch with the institute.

She said the Institute has empowered them with enormous knowledge and urged the new IIM graduates to live up to the aspiration of former President Late Dr A P J Abdul Kalam who wanted to create a liveable planet by becoming constructive human beings.

She also told the graduates that while job opportunities were awaiting them, they should also take the responsibility in nation building without compromising their principles.

Speaking on the occasion, Falguni Rajkumar, Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIM, Shillong said records revealed that the students were among the best the country has and much sought after by the best companies and organisation from across the world.

"In the process they have not only brought laurels to themselves and the institution, but also to the country," Rajkumar said adding he strongly believed in the capability of the new graduates.

"As you enter the busy world of business and commerce, please be conscious of your role as responsible citizens of this country and be committed to the welfare of the people, specially the poor, the downtrodden and the weak," he said.

In his welcome address, Director of IIM, Shillong Prof Amitabha De congratulated the students of the Post Graduate (2014-16) and Post Graduate Post Executives (PGPEx) 2014-15 batch and said during their stay at IIM, Shillong, the Institute has provided them holistic learning and sustainable development.
