Kerala explores tunnel roads
The PWD had already finalized the project and a meeting was held with Konkan Railway officials for preparing a Detailed Project Report, he added.
Kozhikode: The state government is seriously considering two tunnel roads as alternatives to the Wayanad Ghat Road which faces recurring traffic jams. A team including Kozhikode District Collector UV Jose, legislative members CK Saseendran (Kalpetta) and George M Thomas (Tiruvambadi), along with PWD officials of both the districts examined the routes on Thursday.
Tiruvambadi MLA George M Thomas told DC that the team had examined the Adivaram-Chippilithode-Lakkidy Road and Anakkampoyil-Kalladi- Meppadi route.
“The Adivaram-Lakkidy road needs 12 hectares of forest land for expansion which is the major impediment”, he said adding that a tunnel road exempting the forest patch also was under consideration. "The preparatory works for a tunnel road linking Anakkampoyil with Meppadi through Kalladi, also is under process”, he added.
The PWD had already finalized the project and a meeting was held with Konkan Railway officials for preparing a Detailed Project Report, he added. Once completed the 5.5 kilometre Meppadi- Kalladi- Anakkampoyil tunnel road would link Swargamkunnu near Anakkampoyil and reach Kalladi near Meppadi. “The State government has already sanctioned Rs 20 crore for the preparatory works”, he added.
