Tamil Nadu: Expect convective rains next 2 days

Chennai: After a brief lull on Saturday, thunderstorms can be expected in Chennai and other coastal districts from Sunday due to convection.

Models also predict the possibility of moderate rainfall to the southern districts that suffered roasting temperatures for the past one week.

Officials from the Regional Meteorological centre (RMC) said rainfall can be expected for the next two to three days. According to the data from RMC, none of the weather stations in Tamil Nadu, except for Abirampatnam, touched 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Temperature at Madurai, which crossed the 40 degrees mark last week, had come down to 39 C.

Chennai, which was sultry last week due to the humidity levels, had seen a decrease in its temperature on Saturday. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam stations recorded 36.7 and 36.1 C, which are 2.3 and 1.5 C above the normal July temperature. The above normal temperature count was hovering around 3 degrees the previous week.

Explaining the rainfall activity, weather blogger K. Srikanth said, “Wind stability created by the trough descending from the low pressure area in central India triggered storm in the interiors. Being westerlies, they moved towards the coast and the sea breeze has intensified the action.”

On the rainfall front, none of the coastal districts except Cuddalore (3cm) and Puducherry (4cm) received rains on Saturday.
