Revellers litter Osmania University gardens and roads
Students raise questions on negligence of security guards.
Hyderabad: The landscaped garden and administration office in Osmania University were littered with plastic paper plates, cups, glasses and alcohol bottles as revellers from adjoining areas of Tarnaka, Habsiguda, Ramanthapur came inside the campus for a festive day.
The administrative building, astronomy, arts and science college buildings had families come in droves on their bikes and cars and placed mats on the road and in the garden area.
Naresh Dudapaka of the Dalit Minority Students Association explained, “There were families, strangers and many others who were coming since morning inside the campus premises and they are not being stopped by the security guards. They have littered the landscape garden and were having beer outside the administration building. How can the University allow this when students inside the campus have been warned to not indulge in any festival revellery and will be punished?”
The revellers placed mats on the road, parked their vehicles and also carried out the ceremonies near the premises in the afternoon.
Two days ago, Osmania University carried out a major poster and also sms campaign in the campus asking students not to indulge in any festival gaiety inside the campus.
A senior professor of OU on condition of anonymity explained, “We had carried out this exercise of caution against gaiety inside the University premises because every year there is a lot of litter inside the campus. The people from surrounding bastis have been coming for the last few years and this year the decision was taken that their activity too must be curtailed. For this reason, there had been messages sent all across that the University premises will not tolerate these activities. Despite that people came inside.”
The chief security guard who had been sent pictures by the students unions was alerted of their presence but since there was no other senior faculty present they could be moved out only after they had their lunch.
