Chennai: A vehicle thief was arrested after he sought the help of two police constables to push the stolen vehicle near the Puzhal prison in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The man did not know that they were police personnel as they were in plain clothes.
According to police, on Wednesday morning two constables R. Selvamanickam and P. Madhan Kumar, attached to Puzhal station, were drinking tea near a
roadside shop after their duty was over. They were in civvies.
In the meantime, a Tempo traveller vehicle stopped in front of the teashop and the driver sought the help of constables to push the vehicle.
When the police personnel were pushing the vehicle they noticed that there was no key in the vehicle and the vehicle was damaged.
On suspicion, they stopped the driver and traced the mobile number of the owner from the vehicle. However, the owner identified himself as Rehman from Vellore and told them that his vehicle was stolen the previous day.
The constables nabbed vehicle thief Balakrishnan (27) from Periyapalayam and handed him over to Puzhal police.
Meanwhile, on Thursday the city police commissioner A. K. Viswanathan gave away certificates to two police constables.
