BENGALURU: An autorickshaw driver was arrested by the K.R. Puram police for allegedly assaulting a traffic cop on duty in K.R. Puram on Friday. The police have identified the arrested as Syed Nayaz, a resident of Devasandra.

According to the police, traffic police constable Govind Nayak, attached to the KR Puram traffic police station, was manning traffic at Devasandra Circle on Friday afternoon. As auto drivers were stopping vehicles haphazardly causing a traffic jam, Nayak went to the auto drivers and asked them to move their vehicles.

Nayaz started arguing with Nayak accusing him of harassing auto drivers and later allegedly hurled abuses at the cop. When Nayaz tried to leave the place, Nayak got into his auto and asked him to drive the vehicle to the police station.

Nayaz initially obliged, but changed the direction of the auto to Rudrabhoomi, his locality around 300 metres from Devasandra, where he had asked his friends to gather to teach Nayak a lesson. Meanwhile, Nayak had also called up his colleague Rathod who started following the autorickshaw. When the auto reached Rudrabhoomi, around 30-40 men joined Nayuaz and assaulted Nayak before Rathod and other police officials reached the spot. Nayak was injured on his leg, face and back in the assault.

Nayak later filed a complaint with the KR Puram police following which Nayaz was arrested and booked for assaulting and obstructing a public servant, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation among others.
