Retired police officer, wife commit suicide in Nellai

TIRUNELVELI: In a shocking episode, a retired police officer along with his wife, committed suicide, allegedly by consuming poison at his residence here on Saturday.

Mariappan (66), a retired deputy commissioner of police along with his wife, Sundari (60) staying at Veermanikkapuram in Tirunelveli, was also working as a security officer at a private tyre manufacturing unit at Gangaikondan near Tirunelveli.

The officer’s daughter, Kanya, living with her husband in Madurai tried to contact her parents. When nobody picked up the call, Kanya contacted her relative at Palayamkottai and asked him to look up her parents.

The relative knocked at the door that was closed from within and as there was no response, he peeped through the bedroom window to find Sundari lying dead on the bed. He informed the Melapalayam police who led by assistant commissioner, Rajan, rushed to the spot, broke open the door, and also found Mariappan lying dead inside the bathroom.    

Police sent the dead bodies for autopsy to the Tirunelveli medical college hospital, it was reported that the couple had consumed cyanide. Mariappan started his career in the police department as an inspector in Tirunelveli in 1988 and retired as deputy commissioner of police, Chennai.
