Robots, drones fly around at IIT Hyderabad tech fest Elan
This was the first time they were holding the fests in their very own campus at Kandi in Medak.
Hyderabad: Students of the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad had an extra reason to cheer as they celebrated their annual technical fest nVision and cultural fest Elan.
This was the first time they were holding the fests in their very own campus at Kandi in Medak. The earlier fests were conducted at the smaller campus leased from the Ordnance Factory at Yeddumailaram, Medak.
“We have more space now, and we can hold more events and can accommodate a larger number of participants. The new campus is located right beside the national highway and is more accessible for participants,” a student said.
The fests will continue on Sunday. The crux of nVision is robotics and drones, and events like robo wars, junkyard wars, DTMF race and drone flying attracting most participants.
K. Karthik, one of the students organising nVision, said: “Robotics events are conducted every year because they combine various arms of engineering like electronics, programming and mechanical.”
In the drone flying competition, students had to use readymade drones for innovative purposes. Student Gautham showed how drones can be used to monitor pollution levels in the atmosphere in a real-time basis.
The winner of the competition will get the responsibility of devising equipment which can be used on drones to maintain security on the campus.
Elan had a lot to offer for music and art buffs, key event on Sunday is the Campus Princess contest. The winner will get a wild card entry at the Miss India 2016 competition. Students said the beauty pageant was held in earlier editions too.
While the participation from other states has not been much, IIT-H students are confident that their budding institution will attract more talent. Some of the institutions which participated this year include IIT-Kharagpur, IIST-Bengaluru, and the NITs at Warangal and Surat.
