Jallikattu law, an historic achievement: O Panneerselvam
He said the SC quashed the law brought by the DMK government since it did not have President's assent.
Chennai: Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam claimed that the legislation to amend the PCA Act to facilitate jallikattu is an historic achievement, since the state government had obtained the President's assent for the law.
Replying to leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin that why it took three years for the state government to enact such a law, Panneerselvam said so far the Supreme Court was hearing the case, but this year the court had completed hearing and adjourned its verdict. So, it was possible for the government to pass a legislation, he said.
He said the SC quashed the law brought by the DMK government since it did not have President's assent. Earlier, when DMK member Murthy raised the issue, he said the jallikattu ban came into effect when AIADMK was in power in 2012.
Replying to this, the Chief Minister said the Supreme Court had banned the sport in 2006 and several attempts were made to lift it. Stalin, who intervened in the debate lauded the Chief Minister for staying in Delhi for three days to pass an ordinance. "I appreciate him for completing the entire process in three days. But, why he did not do the same in the last three years?" he asked.
