Wrap-up: Misogyny raises its ugly head
There's no stopping these motormouths especially at time of polls.
Two senior politicians — BJP MP Vinay Katiyar and former JD(U) president and Rajya Sabha member Sharad Yadav — last week stoked controversy by making sexist remarks against women.
“Priyanka Gandhi khoobsoorat bhi nahi hain, unse bhi khoobsoorat mahilaayein hain hamare paas. Jitna log kehte hain, prachaar karte hain, utni bhi sundar nahi hain Priyanka Gandhi, BJP mein koie kami hai kya? (Priyanka Gandhi is not that beautiful, we have prettier women and leaders in BJP. She is not that beautiful as people claim her to be),” Mr Katiyar said.
Meanwhile, Senior JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav too landed himself in a controversy after saying a “vote’s prestige is bigger than that of a daughter”.
The former JD(U) chief made the remark at a function in Patna to emphasise the importance of each and every vote.
The BJP tried to distance itself from Mr Katiyar’s comments, with senior Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu saying such utterances were not acceptable to his party and the government also does not support them.
He expressed the hope that both Mr Katiyar and Mr Sharad Yadav would withdraw their statements. The National Commission for Women has issued a notice to Mr Yadav for his remarks and sought an explanation failing which he will have to appear before the panel.
