Chennai: Cops probing Veerasaiva Periya Mutt heads' dispute
The mutt administration committee selected a new madathipathi, on Tuesday.
Kumbakonam : The Kumbakonam west police is conducting enquiries about the happenings at Veerasaiva Periya Mutt near Mahamaham tank in the temple town, following complaints lodged by two madathipathis, the new and the old Mutt heads.
According to police, Sri Jagadguru Neelakanta Saranga Desikendra Mahaswamigal is the 97th madathipathi of the mutt. Alleging that he was involved in Rs 80 crore swindling of mutt funds, the mutt administration committee selected a new madathipathi, on Tuesday.
The selection was made by Chitradurga Mutt madathipathi Sri Sivamurthy Muruga Saranaru and Muruga Rajendra Periya Madathipathi. Pattabishekam was also performed to the new madathipathi, Sri Basava Murugasaranga Desika Mahaswamy (30), at the mutt, on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, learning about the incident, Sri Neelkanta Saranga Desikendra Mahaswamigal who was in Bengaluru, came to the Mutt late on Tuesday night. As the Mutt premises was locked, his supporters broke open the locks, entered the premises, damaged the portraits of the new madathipathi and also allegedly beat the new madathipathi and his supporters. The injured new madathipathi and his supporters left the Mutt.
