KMRL to deploy 100 autos in Kochi

The E-autos will be available at six stations -- Aluva, Kalamassery, Edappally, Kaloor, MG Road and Maharajas College.

KOCHI: Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) will deploy 100 autos-rickshaws to operate as feeder services initially to provide commuters with first and last mile connectivity. Besides, the formation of a registered society set to run autos all across the city is underway, bringing nearly 15,000 under its umbrella gradually.

The KMRL had earlier tied up with the Ernakulam District Auto Rickshaw Drivers Trade Unions Coordination Committee for the purpose. KMRL managing director A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said the registration of the society and launch of autos would complete in February. 

"I had a word with the coordination committee on this. There are some hitches to be cleared. Then the inauguration date will be fixed," he told DC. 

"We are also considering additional services from Aluva metro station to the international airport at the earliest. Besides E-autos, there'll be E-buses as well in the city."

The Auto-Taxi Co-ordination Committee convener M.B. Syamanthabhadran said there's no delay and the registration of the society will be over in two-three days.

The E-autos will be available at six stations -- Aluva, Kalamassery, Edappally, Kaloor, MG Road and Maharajas College. The vehicle uses the latest technology ensuring excellent performance and efficiency.  With a single charge, autos can run nearly 70 km.

Meanwhile, KMRL in collaboration with WRI India Ross Center for Sustainable cities and Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) launched the Kochi Metro Data Innovation Challenge (STAMP - Station Access and Mobility Program) on Wednesday.

The nationwide competition seeks innovative solutions to improve first and last mile connectivity.
