Hyderabad: The state prison department of Telangana is all set to go on an asset management drive, as it has submitted a proposal to the state government for leasing out the vacant spaces in the prison to the other state prisoners.  The prisoners who are under trial for non-grievous and non-serious crimes are the ones who would be eligible for the offer. V.K. Singh, Director General of Telangana Prisons confirmed that, there was a drop in the crime rate in the state. He mentioned that he has come to this conclusion after observing the inflow and outflow of prisoners over a period of time.

As of now, across the 50 jails of Telangana, there is space for 6,848 prisoners and currently there are 5,848 prisoners, which shows that there is space for 1,000 more prisoners and in future the availability would increase. A state which wishes to avail of this facility would have to pay an amount of Rs 10,000 for each prisoner they send to the Telangana state prison.  The pay would include the rent of the cell, medical benefits and food which would be offered to the prisoners.

Also, the prisoners who would come from other states would be given rehabilitation and training in skill development, so that they could get employment after they were out of jail. VK Singh also confirmed that, once the idea was approved, they would send the proposal to the other states and accordingly arrangements would be made.
