Hyderabad: After the Centre cleared 10 per cent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal has increased its strength by 430 seats. The same is expected in other institutes as well by education experts.

With this decision, major institutes are revamping their infrastructure and faculty intake to accommodate more students in each class room.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, director of NIT Warangal N.V. Ramana Rao said, “We already started making plans for changes in infrastructure and intake of new faculty. We are keen on arranging other facilities like additional hostels. Depending on student strength, we will be allotting bigger classrooms as well. We will be ready with everything by the time the academic year starts this July.”

The intake capacity of NITW in 2018-19 is 1,719 students for the six programmes that the institute offers. Now, the intake will go up to 2,149 with the implementation of 10 per cent reservation to EWS.

NIT, Trichy is accommodating an additional 490 seats in various programmes. The Union human resource development ministry has written to directors of all NITs and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, IIEST, stating, “Every Central educational institution shall, with the prior approval of the appropriate forum, increase the number of seats over and above its annual permitted strength in each branch of study or faculty so that the number of seats available, excluding those reserved for persons belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWSs), is not less than the number of such seats available in each category for the academic session immediately.”

It was mentioned that in order to accommodate the facilitation of 10 per cent reservation to EWS, there should be an increase of seats for admission by 25 per cent in total.

The increase of students is applicable to all undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD programmes.

The institutes were also directed to ensure that the 10 per cent reservation for EWS is implemented without any reduction in the number and the percentage of reservation provided to SC, ST and OBC categories.
