Hyderabad: A Social Media campaign will be   launched against water pollution by pharmaceutical companies. Pharma companies often let their untreated effluents flow into water, causing foaming and frothing of water bodies in parts of Musi river and Hussainsagar.

A press meet was held on Tuesday by NGO, Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) against the upcoming Pharma city at Government City College.

“At present, we are facing so many problems due to the pharma industry. Hyderabad has become a drought-hit city because of their unethical practices. The water inflow from Kukkatpally, the lake at Nacharam and Hussainsagar in front of Marriot Hotel can all be seen to have foam on their surface, which makes them unfit use,” says Luba Sarawat, the head of SOUL.

The groundwater near most Pharma establishments is polluted and unsafe for drinking.

“You can see a lot of pink effluents at the lake in HMT Nagar. All the existing pharma companies do not turn on their waste treatment machines for fear of the electricity consumption bills and the residents have to pay the price of living in a place with no water,” says Sarawati K., a concerned citizen.

Attended by 50 people including students, the press meet aimed at making students more environment-conscious. Manjulatha, the principal of City College, says, “We must encourage the young minds to work for the environment to bring about change. A social media drive be held with companies targeted on Whatsapp and Facebook.”
