Karnataka: Teen with meningitis writes board exam, scores high
“Due to demyelination I lost vision in my left eye, and could not even stand as my knees felt,\" recalls the brave teen.
Bengaluru: Falling ill during an examination can be a huge disadvantage. But 16-year- old Shreyas, a 10th grader at the Regency Public School of the city, showed he is made of sterner stuff when he scored an impressive 96 per cent in the recent ICSE examination despite being admitted twice to hospital suffering from not just any fever, but meningitis, during the examination.
The first time he was admitted to MS Ramaiah hospital with the dreaded fever of the brain was on February 15 and the second, on March 12 for demyelination of the central nervous system and brain caused by an allergic reaction of viral meningitis.
“Due to demyelination I lost vision in my left eye, and could not even stand as my knees felt," recalls the brave teen, who wrote the board examination from hospital between March 15 and 20 in the presence of an external invigilator.
He was discharged from hospital on March 21 after successfully completing his exams and to his joy, he scored an impressive 96 per cent when the results were announced on Monday by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE).
“I believe in laying more emphasis on textbooks to understand the fundamentals and basic concepts,” explains Shreyas, who is still undergoing treatment.
