Thiruvananthapuram: Considering a long pending demand of non-resident Keralites (NRKs), the Norka-Roots has decided to launch an ambulance service for them.

The service mainly for helping financially weak NRKs returning from abroad due to medical reasons as well as to carry the dead bodies.

According to Norka sources, the state government had already given the administrative sanction for the '55-lakh project, titled Norka Emergency Ambulance Service.

Norka-Roots plans to implement the scheme by tying up with any government or leading private ambulance and emergency service providers.

NRKs returning on medical grounds would be provided transportation either to their house or hospital.

The modalities for implementing the service is being finalised by Norka-Roots and would be announced soon.

It would also take steps to create awareness among the NRKs about the scheme, said sources.

Difficulties in taking bodies of NRKs back home as well as arranging transportation for the ill were some of their pressing issues. Hence the decision to provide ambulance service would give some relief to the low-income NRKs.

Often many are at the mercy of Malayali associations to meet their transportation expenses.
