Hyderabad: Prompt response by the police saved the lives of three transgenders who were being attacked at Chandrayangutta late on Sunday night.
The police could not save a fourth person, who was lynched by the mob.
A group of persons spotted the transgenders begging in the area and accosted them after videos were spread of an alleged incident in Sangareddy district.
The mob then beat up the transgenders. “When we tried to intervene we were heckled and kicked by the crowd. We reached the spot within five minutes of receiving information. We shifted all of them to safety in a patrol car but the crowd attacked the vehicle too,” said Kanchanbagh inspector N. Shanker.
A video of the incident was picked up by netizens in the following days, who appreciated the good work done by the police.
Reacting to the praise, Chandranyangutta inspector Y. Prakash Reddy, who rushed to the spot along with the Kanchanbagh police, said, “We were just doing our duty.”
The rescued were identified as Swamy, Narasimhulu and Ravi.
When the police shifted them to hospital, the gangs then rushed towards the police stations following rumours that another gang of kidnappers was lodged at the Chandrayangutta police station.
A crowd tried to gatecrash into the police station but were thwarted by assistant sub-inspector Taher Ali and police personnel Abdullah, Suresh, Ravi, Sayeed, Srinivas, Razaaq and Rohit.
