Kovai youth trampled to death by wild jumbo

Coimbatore: An unidentified youth estimated to be around 25-year-old was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Thondamuthoor- Chinnar beat in Coimbatore forest division in the early hours of Wednesday.

DFO D. Venkatesh told DC that a couple of days ago a female elephant along with a five-year-old calf entered human habitats close to Poluvampatty range in Coimbatore forest division.

On receiving the information from the farmers about the two elephant frequently entering farmlands during night hours and ransacking their plantations, a team of AP watchers were deployed to drive the elephants back into the woods.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday around 4 am the two including the calf entered a house breaking the door while the owner of house Nanjammal, 55, and her grandson were sleeping inside the house.

Hearing the trumpeting of elephants Nanjammal and her grandson hided themselves behind the cupboard and escaped. The female and calf left the house after emptying the 100 kg cattle feed, which was kept in a gunny bag at the back yard of the house. On its way back to the woods the female had trampled an identified youth.

On receiving the information from the members of public, forest range officer C. Palani Vel Raja along with a team rushed to the spot and sent the body to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

The case was handed over to Thondamuthoor police as the forest officials were unable to identified the diseased further investigations are on added the official.
