HYDERABAD: A woman constable of the Railway Police Force and a good Samaritan turned saviours of a passenger, who was trying to board a fast-moving train and was about to fall into the gap between the train and the platform, at the Begumpet Railway Station around 9 pm on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said that the RPF constable, Kumari Sanita, noticed a woman passenger, Saraswathi, trying to board the Lingampalli-Falaknuma Express, which had already started moving. As the train picked up speed, the passenger’s grip was slipping and she was at risk of falling, but Sanita acted swiftly by catching hold of the woman and pulling her out, thereby saving her and averting a potential tragedy.

The good Samaritan, meanwhile, picked up the woman’s mobile phone, which had fallen on the platform floor, handed it to her and waited to ensure that the passenger was alright before leaving the premises, without disclosing his name.

Sanita said that the man saw the passenger losing her balance and caught hold of her arm in a bid to rescue her.

Debashmita C. Banerjee, the senior divisional security commissioner for RPF’s Secunderabad division, praised the constable and said that the RPF are alert about such incidents as part of their ‘Mission Jeevan Raksha’.

“As ‘citizens in uniform’, our personnel go beyond the call of duty, risking their own lives to save others. There are incidents wherein passengers trying to board/de-board a moving train slip and fall, facing a risk of going under the wheels of the train. Under the mission, two passengers have been saved so far in 2023,” Debashmita said.

Sanita is a native of Tirumalgiri village in Nalgonda district and joined the RPF in 2020.

“During her duty, she has done good works and assisted passengers earlier on many occasions. Her selfless action not only earned recognition within the department but also the gratitude of the passenger whose life she saved,” Debashmita said.

Railway police appealed to passengers to report any instance of unsafe practice at railway stations or on trains to the nearest RPF personnel or on the Railway Helpline 139. “By working together, we can create a safer railway environment for everyone,” Debashmita said.
