Hyderabad: Boy, 9, killed as car crashes into pond
Police suspects car was moving at excessive speed.
Hyderabad: A joy ride for six children to the RGI Airport turned into a tragedy after the car in which they were travelling met with accident near the airport, killing a boy while leaving the injuring five other children and their uncle.
The victims belong to the same family and are residents of Moghalpura in the Old City. They had gone to see off another uncle who was flying to Dubai.
The deceased was identified as Md Azam Alauddin, 9, a Class IV student.
Police said Sheikh Moosa, 50, was flying to Dubai to take up employment. His brother-in-law Abdul Bin Hakeem was to drop him off at the airport in their car.
Meanwhile, the kids of their relatives who gathered to see off Mr Moosa also wanted to see the airport and joined the two.
After dropping off Mr Moosa at the airport, they spent some time there looking around and clicking photographs and headed back home.
When the vehicle reached Novotel Hotel, Mr Hakeem lost control of the wheel and the car hit a divider on the right, turned, went off the road and crashed in a dried up pond by the roadside. All the passengers were injured and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
“Azam Allauddin was declared brought dead. Others sustained injuries and are recovering now. We suspect that excessive speed to be the reason for the accident,” sub-inspector Shiva Kumar of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police station said. He added that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Police suspect that in addition to speed, the noise of the kids and their playing in the moving vehicle could have been among the reasons the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The injured kids were identified as Fatima, 11, Shaikh Meher Ali, 6, Shaikh Yousuf, 3, Zain Ali, 3, and Shaikh Osman, 3.
They are out of danger, police said.
