Postcard campaign to preserve history
The postcard series would help in reviving people's interest in the city's heritage and culture.
Hyderabad: To protect and preserve the history of the state, city historians are developing a series of historical postcards. The Deccan Heritage Trust is producing the postcard series entitled “Historic Charminar, which features 12 different pictures of the Charminar, taken from the 1870s to the 1990s.
The postcards are being released on the occasion of the Charminar’s 425th year of construction. So far, over 60,000 picture postcards featuring the various monuments of Hyderabad have been printed to be distributed to people, to increase interest in the state’s culture and heritage.
Dr Muhammad Safi-ullah, a city historian, says, “We are coming up with a beautiful collection of picture postcards. With increased use of the internet and social media, people seem to have forgotten the beauty of letters. The concept of sending postcards has almost completely disappeared. To revive the tradition, we are coming up with a series of picture postcards featuring the monuments of Hyderabad and Telangana state.”
He adds that each monument featured in the postcards has some historical significance. “We have to explain the history and the importance of the monuments to people, to help them understand the history of the state.”
“It is very important for the current generation, which is not aware of the history of the state. There is a need for these kinds of materials to be made available at tourist spots in the city. Area-specific materials will allow tourists to take back something memorable from Hyderabad, a city which is known for its heritage and its monuments, he said.
