Hyderabad: An emerging new trend in the Muslim community promises to be a harbinger of good times ahead. More and more couples, mainly the grooms, are now opting for simpler weddings rather than extravagant, expensive weddings favoured in the past. It is not as though lavish weddings are not being planned or done. Yes, the exorbitantly funded fancy weddings are popular but there are also simpler and quieter weddings where the Nikaah is done at the mosque and the bride and groom head home directly from there.

Mohd Abdul Qaiyum, an electrical engineer who works in Saudi Arabia, recently got married at a simple ceremony at a mosque in Mallepally. After the marriage, the couple offered prayers and then they went to the bride’s home, where after a small get-together, the couple was given a tearful but happy send-off. “I didn’t want to burden my wife’s family. Marriage should be a simple affair and not burdensome for any family. I hope others grooms-to-be follow suit”, said the principled groom. The next day, Mr Qaiyum hosted a reception ‘walima’ for his friends and relatives at a function hall.

Mohammed Abbas Ali and Hafiz Mohammed Osman Ali are brothers, living in Saidabad. While Abbas is a civil engineer, Hafiz is a businessman. Earlier this month both brothers got married at a masjid-cum-madrasa.

The bridegrooms’ family informed the mosque committee about the programme and were accorded permission. There is a separate section for women where the ladies were accommodated. Soon after the nikaah, the newlyweds left for their homes.

“In fact, there was no arrangement for food or even tea. The guests turned up, attended the marriage ceremony and left. In fact they appreciated the simplicity”, said Mohammed Iqbal Ali, a relative.

A few mosques, like Masjid-e-Aliya at Gunfoundary, Azizia masjid at Mehdipatnam, Shahi Masjid Bagh-e-Aam at Public Gardens, Masjid-e-Chowk and the Macca Masjid witness such marriages. Sadr (chief) Qazi of Shariat Panah (the Old City of Hyderabad) Mir Quadir Ali said that the trend is slow but encouraging. “We come across rich families too who perform simple marriages. We hope others will emulate them,” he said.
