Coimbatore: Kovai SP takes initiative against honour killing
In a similar incident, another couple Kanagaraj and Darshini were killed at Mettupalayam.
Coimbatore: The district superintendent of police has taken the initiative to prevent honour killings in Coimbatore. According to a police official, the Udumalpet Shankar honour killing case that took place a couple of years ago had created a sensation across the state after the CCTV video footage of the murder taking place in broad daylight in a public place went viral on social media.
In a similar incident, another couple Kanagaraj and Darshini were killed at Mettupalayam. This forced the Madras High Court to express dissatisfaction and question the government for not taking the initiative to prevent honour killings.
As a follow-up, under the supervision of Coimbatore district SP, Sujith Kumar, a special team comprising social welfare officials has been formed. The department has also announced the special division complaint phone numbers in case of threats from parents and community associations against inter-caste marriages. The complaint numbers are: 0422-2200777, 9498101165, 9498181212 (control room number).
We also plan to install ‘awareness banners’ in front of colleges and public places where people gather in large numbers, added the official.
