Hyderabad: Life convicts, who intentionally committed murders do not stand a chance for remission as the committee on remissions has slammed its door on them. The committee is headed by the inspector general of prisons.

Mr. Vinoy Kumar Singh, director general of prisons, said that the department would submit the recommendations to the government, which will release the guidelines for remission of prisoners, sentenced to life in the year 2018.

Earlier, the government allowed remission for prisoners with good conduct and those who completed certain period of conviction.

The government also took into consideration the age factor before issuing clemency, Mr. Singh said, and added, “But this time, we want to exclude those prisoners who committed offences with ‘fire arms’, sickles or other deadly weapons. However, prisoners who committed the heinous crime using non-lethal weapons and those who committed murders in unexpected circumstances may be spared.”

He said that women life convicts who completed at least five years of imprisonment and with good conduct may get some relief in the upcoming remission policy. “For males we are adopting the previous measurements and a cut-off imprisonment by at least seven years. Besides, we will also consider the age factor which will give relief to elderly inmates with good conduct,” he said. Mr Singh noted that the number of remission recommendations from the department would not exceed 100.
