Judge questions rationale for deploying police force at Poes Garden

Chennai: Observing that police personal were burdened with unnecessary deployment of bundobust duties and not even given time for spending with their families Justice N. Kirubakaran questioned the government about the need for deployment of huge police force in Poes Garden. “What is the need for deployment of such a huge police force in Poes Garden now. I have seen a large deployment of police when I was coming to the court today also. What is the need of such huge police there nowdays?”

 Justice Kirubakaran posed these questions to additional advocate general in the court when a petition filed by one T.C. Sharath of Studio 11 of Trustpuram, Kodambakkam, came up for hearing on Monday. The petitioner sought action against people smoking cigarettes in the public places including near educational institution and tobacco product sellers.

Dissatisfied with the action taken report filed by the police relating to the issue, Justice Kirubakaran observed that these days sub-inspectors are unable to file FIRs properly. The judge also asked why the police had not appointed legal experts. The judge asked the Additional advocate general what is the use of these FIRs and every section is a bailable one and there is no non-baliable sections. The judge said the report has not disclosed about the cases filed against the tobacco products sellers near educational institutions and other prohibited places. Later, the judge directed AAG to file a fresh report.
