Bengaluru: With the amount of animal waste collected from various parts of the city on the rise, BBMP is planning to separately collect, transport and process them in an animal waste management plant. Animal wastes comprise entrails and internal organs, feathers, discarded skin and other parts.

City Mayor Gangambike told Deccan Chronicle, “Each day the city generates nearly 4,500 metric tons of solid wastes. Animal wastes constitutes nearly 85 tons and handling them needs special care." Plans are on to find suitable place to set up waste management plant exclusively for animal wastes, she added.

Talks are on at the joint commissioner level to formulate ways and means. During night hours meat vendors resort to illegal dumping the wastes near lakes and roads, which attracts stray dogs, she said.

Currently animal waste is being mixed with wet waste and hence the processing does not achieve the desired effect.

If they are separately collected then wet wastes can be converted into manure and animal wastes can be processed by boiling and drying to feed pets and be supplied to fisheries industry. Soon the BBMP will collect animal waste separately and process it, she added.
