Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday, expressing anger over private varsities failing to implement SC and ST reservations in admissions, ordered a probe into their functioning. He said that the government was ready to bring in a law in the Legislative Assembly for effective implementation of SC/ST reservations in private institutions.

Revanth Reddy said the private varsities were violating the rights granted under the Constitution of India, which provides for reservation to SC and ST communities in all educational institutions.

Officials were directed to submit a detailed report on the permissions, guidelines, facilities provided by the government, number of students, fee structure, fee reimbursement, teaching staff and non-teaching staff in private universities. He also sought a report on varsities that were functioning without basic facilities and qualified staff.

The Chief Minister sought a report on a particular varsity that was allowed to run on residential-use plots, as per the Dharani portal, saying that such arbitrary decisions led to a decrease in the quality of education at such institutions.

He said that many people were facing difficulties due to the grant of permissions to universities on disputed plots registered under the housing category, as students were losing academic years by signing up with such universities that failed to obtain permissions.

The Chief Minister also ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the funds spent under the ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’ programme, which utilised the funds of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
