Kolkata: Former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr Sandip Ghosh and three others, arrested for their role in corruption at the state-run facility, were remanded by a city court in eight-day CBI custody on Tuesday.

The Mamata Banerjee government later suspended Dr Ghosh with “immediate effect” after a huge pressure from the medical fraternity since his arrest in the hands of the CBI on Monday evening. The state health department issued the suspension order in the evening.

Earlier in the afternoon, Dr Ghosh, two vendors-- Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra-- and Afsar Ali, a security staff of Dr Ghosh were produced at the Alipore Court by the CBI amid protests. The demonstrators shouted ‘Chor, Chor’ slogan at them.

During the hearing, the CBI prayed for custody of the quartet. The judge later accepted it and sent them to eight-day CBI remand. When Dr Ghosh was being taken out of the courtroom along with other accused, one of the protesters slapped him on the head from the crowd.

He could not be traced later. Preliminary investigations revealed that Biplab and Suman worked under Dr Ghosh in the corruption racket at RGKMCH.
