Bhopal: A day before the announcement of the results of the 2024 general elections, senior BJP leader and former Union minister Uma Bharti on Monday took everyone by surprise by predicting that the BJP-led NDA may cross the 450-mark.

Ms Bharti who has been on a spiritual tour of Himalayas since last two months took to social media site X to forecast that “I will not be surprised if NDA gets more than 450 seats in the Lok Sabha elections”.

Terming the pilgrims thronging to religious places of significance in Himalayan region as ‘bellwether’, she said that her interactions with them during her stay in the area have convinced her that NDA will win more than 450 seats in the polls.

“Pilgrims from across the country visit various religious places in Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. I was interacting with them during my stay in the region to gauge their pulses. I am convinced after interactions with them that NDA will get more than 450 seats”, she said.

Interestingly, no exit poll aired on June one has predicted a victory of such scale for NDA in the general elections.

India Today-Axis My India has forecast the maximum 361-401 seats for NDA, while Today’s Chanakya predicted 335 seats to the BJP and 400 to the BJP-led alliance.

The BJP had coined the ‘400 paar’ slogan for NDA in the Lok Sabha polls.

Former chief minister Ms Bharti who last contested the Lok Sabha polls from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh in 2014 and subsequently became a member in the Narendra Modi cabinet at the Centre, has attributed a possible landslide victory for NDA in the polls to the miserable failure of the Opposition to emerge as an alternative force by putting forth their ideology effectively before the people.

“The campaign by the Opposition all through the elections had centred on Modi bashing and was ‘highly negative’. The Opposition did not highlight the real issues (facing the people)”, she said.

“The Opposition has collapsed. A new Opposition should emerge to strengthen the democracy in the country”, she added.

Ms Bharti had stayed away from the last two LS elections citing preoccupation with her mission for conservation of Ganga.
