HYDERABAD: From where can universities and students get the motivation to excel? It is the beehive, which is seemingly a lump from the outside but an engineering marvel from inside, observed Anand Mahindra, Mahindra Group chairman and chancellor of Mahindra University.

Addressing students at the third convocation of the university in its Bahadurpally campus here on Friday, Mahindra said that universities’ focus should be to attain a proportionate ratio vis-à-vis research, innovation, employability, skills, solving societal problems and opening new learning vistas, among others, just like the beehive, which can weigh up to 100 kg, stay 3m to 6m above the ground and still stay together.
“A lot of work happens in a beehive. Each cell is glued to the other, despite existing as an individual cell. There is a lot of chemistry in the beehive. They are hubs of activity but still maintain a fine balance between weight and strength,” he said.
Mahindra urged students to excel in their respective fields as it is their individual performances that define the distinctive characteristic of the university they are studying.

On the role of a university, he said that the focus should be on catering to the needs of a varied society.

“There are contradictory goals as a spectre of jobless growth is hovering over us,” he said.

Impetus is needed for innovation, research and thinking. Mahindra university will invest time and resources to take the university to newer heights”, he said.

Addressing the convocation, state health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha said, “The 21st century is driven by change and technology is uniting the world. There is a need to make informed decisions. In this changing world, culture, education and values set people apart from others.”

“Youngsters should focus on exponential thinking in today’s digitised world. Educational institutions rooted in the industry provide relevant jobs, impart training and skilling for lifelong professional skills, and grant access to cutting-edge research and real time learning,” said Shobana Kamineni, director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise.
Meanwhile, Mahindra University awarded degrees to 751 students.

In a touching scene, a Honoris Causa doctorate was posthumously bestowed on Vineet Nayyar, who had envisioned Mahindra University.

The varsity had earlier inaugurated a Vineet Nayyar academic block to perpetuate his memory.
