Vijayawada: In one of the most complicated heart operations carried out in Andhra Pradesh successfully, doctors at Aster Ramesh Hospitals in Guntur saved the life of a 35-year-old techie by performing emergency angioplasty, intra-aortic balloon pump and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

The software engineer at Infosys was hospitalised after he suffered a heart attack during a temple visit at Mangalagiri.

A cardiac team led by senior cardiologist Dr Rama Rao diagnosed the patient with cardiogenic shock and pulmonary edema. He was put on ventilator. Then an intra-aortic balloon pump was inserted and an angiogram revealed 100 per cent blockage in the main artery. Emergency angioplasty was performed to remove the clots.

However, the patient showed signs of multiple-organ failure with rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, reduced urine output, inadequate oxygen levels and low heart pumping. As a last resort, the patient was connected to the ECMO.

Dr Rama Rao said the patient’s life was out of danger.
