I am handing over my son to you, Sonia tells Rae Bareli voters
New Delhi: Congress parliamentary party leader Sonia Gandhi on Friday addressed a rally in Rae Bareli, her former parliamentary constituency. The rally was also attended by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with their Uttar Pradesh ally and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.
"My everything is all given to me by you. You gave me a chance to serve you as an MP for 20 years. This is the biggest asset in my life. Now, I am giving you my son. You consider me yours," she said, urging the voters to consider Mr Gandhi as their own as well.
"I taught the same lessons to Rahul and Priyanka that Indira Gandhi and the people of Rae Bareli had taught me. To respect all, protect the weak and fight against injustice for the rights of people. Don't be afraid, because your roots of struggle and traditions are very deep," she said at a joint election rally in Rae Bareli.
Mrs Gandhi was first elected as an MP from Rae Bareli in 2004 and represented the seat till earlier this year, when she vacated it after getting elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Mr Gandhi is in the fray from the Rae Bareli constituency this time.
The SP chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also addressed the rally. Mr Yadav said that the BJP has been defeated in the first four phases of the ongoing LS polls and the people of Uttar Pradesh have trapped the saffron party in the state.
The SP chief recalled the farm bills and asked voters to refrain from choosing the BJP. He asked people to remember the BJP as one that was imposing black laws on farmers.
Mr Yadav attacked the BJP, accusing them of making "false promises”. He also accused the BJP of deliberately leaking the question papers so that they do not have to give jobs. Raising concern, he said that the paper for every exam was leaked. “Not one, but more than 10 exams' papers were leaked," said the SP chief.
