Considering the inconvenience of the public, it was expected that the authorities concerned would take immediate steps for restoration and repair of the road in question.

Chennai: The link road that provides easy access for the residents of Chrompet Radha Nagar, Nemilicherry and Zameen Royapettah to the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam 200ft radial road has been in a poor condition for a long time now.  More than 5000 people use the 2-kilometre stretch to reach the arterial Grand Southern Trunk Road and Tambaram-Velachery Main Road.

“The road gives a nightmarish experience to us as it is severely tattered with sharp stones protruding to puncture our tires.  With elected representatives and officials paying little attention to carry out repair and maintenance works, the roads have suffered extensive damage,” rued Divya Bharati, a resident of Chrompet.

She further added that the situation worsens in monsoon and accidents become frequent on the slushy roads. “Each time we complain, the workmen fill the road with gravel and sand, which fail to withstand even a single rain.”

A few people said the slush was due to the sand laid on the road after the Nemilicherry lake was desilted and deepened recently.

Residents also complained that the cab drivers refuse to accept the rides in the area due to the conditi on of the roads and cashing the opportunity, auto drivers charge exorbitant prices to drop them till the main road.

With most of the street lamps upturned during cyclone Vardah, the illumination too is very poor in the stretch. While few CCTV cameras installed previously are not working, but still installed, some have been removed.
