Edappadi villagers roll coconut to catch thief

Finally, villagers left disappointed as the coconut shell did not make any headway.

Salem: In a bizarre act, villagers near Edappadi in Salem district rolled down a coconut shell painstakingly for upto ten kilometers on the road, believing that it would help them identity a thief.

They believed that the coconut would stop at the place of the thief who stole 15 sovereigns of gold jewels from a local temple at Koranampatty, Konganapuram Union in Edappady, a week ago.

The coconut shell rolling began at 8 am on Monday and concluded at 11 pm. Finally, villagers left disappointed as the coconut shell did not make any headway.  Though disappointed, villagers said that the thief could have been an outsider and hence had escaped.

Ironically, the shell, after passing through several areas such as Koranampatty, Moolapathai, Konganapuram and Rangampalayam began to head towards the same temple from where its journey began. Villagers said that a priest in their neighbourhood advised them to do so to trace the burglar. As the news of the bizarre act spread like wildfire, thousands of curious public and youngsters gathered to watch the new method of cracking a burglary case.
