Kozhikode: Moms etch colours to raise funds

KOZHIKODE: For the fifth consecutive year, these homemakers from Kozhikode are displaying their talents before the public - to raise funds for the children at the cancer ward of the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) at the Government Medical College hospital, here. There are artists, seamstresses, jewellery makers and pottery painters among the 10 of them, who come together every year around the beginning of the summer holidays. On display are clothes, jewellery, murals and products made out of waste materials. The exhibition that began at Srishti art gallery, opposite Tagore centenary hall on Friday, will continue until April 4.

From the sale, 30 to 50 per cent of the profit would go to the patients, said Premja Baburaj, one of the team members of ‘Snehavarnangal’. “According to the needs of the children, equipment or services would be provided to them. The ward in charge or the doctors concerned would let us know what immediate demand they have,” she added. In the last four years, they could set up a children’s park and play area for the kids at the IMCH, along with purchase of study materials, computer, printer, television set, study table etc. The expo was inaugurated by mayor Thottathil Raveendran. This year, the group aims at raising Rs 1 lakh. The team of ‘Snehavarnangal’ includes: Geetha Vasudevan, Praneetha Divakaran, Premja Baburaj, Soumya Moolat, Rugmini S. Nair, Latha Rajan, Radhika Ranjith, Sudha Premnath, Reshmi Kishore and Veena Saboo.
