Two women lose lives in pit after rescuing their kids in AP's Nellore

TIRUPATI: Two women of Bhagat Singh Colony in Venkateswarapuram area of Nellore city lost their lives due to asphyxiation after rescuing their children from a deep pit.

According to police, children who had been playing in the colony accidentally fell into the pit. Seeing them distressed, their mothers Shaheena and Shabeena got into the pit and handed them over to others outside the pit. However, they themselves got trapped in the deep pit and got asphyxiated to death.

The deep pits had been dug for constructing a revetment wall across River Penna.

Activists of CPM and Telugu Desam staged a demonstration at Bhagat Singh Colony demanding ₹50 lakh ex-gratia for the family of the two deceased.

CPM leader Kathi Srinivasulu blamed the contractor for not incorporating safety measures while digging the pit, resulting in the mishap. TDP city in-charge Kotamreddy Srinivasulu Reddy called for legal action against the contractor for the incident.
