Five-year rigorous imprisonment for attempted rape

TIRUPATI: The Additional District Judge in Ongole sentenced a 36-year-old man to five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 for attempting to rape a woman.

The accused, Tanneru Saratbabu, a resident of Kalikivayi village in Singarayakonda mandal of Prakasam district, was charged with an attempt to rape a 29-year-old woman from the same village. The incident took place on September 28, 2018.

The victim, a daily-wage worker, was residing at her parent's house with her two children while her husband was away in Hyderabad for work. At around 11:30 pm, an intruder entered the house and attempted to rape her.

The woman recognised the assailant as Saratbabu and raised an alarm. Her parents rushed to her aid, and the man escaped from there.

 The victim and her parents lodged a complaint at the Singarayakonda police station. Judge Somashekhar found Saratbabu guilty of the offence.
