Chennai generates additional 67 tonnes waste after Deepavali

Chennai: Chennai generated 67 tonnes of additional hazardous waste mostly comprising crackers during this Deepavali season. Zones with commercial areas like Adyar, Kodambakkam and Teynampet generated maximum garbage during the festival of lights making the total accumulated garbage of Chennai (Saturday and  Sunday) to 10,101 tonnes.

“On an average Chennai generates around 5,500 to 6,500 tonnes of waste per day but during Deepavali the accumulation of plastic and cracker waste is more, a corporation official said adding that 67 tonnes of cracker waste had been moved to a common hazardous waste treatment facility on Gummidipoondi Sipcot campus for further incineration.

According to a press release from Ripon Buildings north Chennai saw less generation of garbage during this Deepavali when compared to south and central Chennai where shopping complexes and hotels are located.

In Chennai, the Teynampet area had the highest amount of garbage with about 1,390 tonnes collected on October 29 and 30, followed by Adyar with 1,366 tonnes of waste. Manali zone had the least generation of 73.7 tonnes of waste followed by Manali and Thiruvottiyur recording less than 300 metric tonnes of garbage during Deepavali.
